The valve body is cracked, or the threads have stripped

What has gone wrong

Water comes up out of the ground at the valve rather than out of the sprinklers, or you can see a split in the plastic, or a fitting will not tighten because the thread has gone.

Valve bodies fail in three ways and all three end the same place.

  • Over-tightening. The commonest by far. Reticulation fittings are plastic and seal on tape or an O-ring, not on force. A spanner where fingers would have done splits the housing, sometimes months later.
  • UV. A valve sitting in the open with no box goes brittle. Perth sun does it in a few years, and it usually shows first as a bonnet that cracks around the screws.
  • Age with help. The ground moves, poly pipe pulls on the fitting, somebody stands on it, and eventually the thread or the body gives.

None of these are repairable. A cracked body is replaced.

Why this happens in Perth

Two Perth-specific reasons this comes up more than it should.

Valves out in the sun. A lot of older Perth systems have valves sitting in a garden bed with no box at all, or with a box whose lid went brittle and got thrown away. Direct UV on a plastic valve body for a decade of Perth summers is what turns a cracked bonnet from unlucky into inevitable. If you replace a valve, put a box over it — that is what makes the next one last.

Sand moves. Sandy soil does not hold a pipe still the way clay does. Poly pipe shifts as the ground wets and dries, and everything it is connected to takes that load — which is why the fitting at the valve is so often the thing that lets go rather than the pipe itself.

The ban plays its usual part. Damage done in autumn does not announce itself until 1 September, when the water comes back on and the split finally has pressure behind it.

Is this a DIY job?

Yes. Everything below is 24V AC or purely mechanical, which is the part of a reticulation system a homeowner can safely work on.

Before you touch anything

  • Reticulation solenoids run on 24V AC. Low voltage, safe to handle.
  • Do not open the controller itself. It is mains-powered — that is an electrician's job, not a DIY one.
  • Turn the water off at the tap or master valve before you open any valve body.
  • Photograph the wiring before you disconnect anything. You will not remember it.

Make sure it is the valve

Find where the water is actually coming from. Turn the station on and watch. Water welling up beside the valve can be the valve, or it can be the poly fitting either side of it, or the pipe. Those are different jobs and only one of them is this page.

Check the bonnet screws first. If the leak is from the join between the bonnet and the body, and the body itself looks sound, the screws may simply be loose or unevenly tightened. Turn the water off, do them up in a cross pattern, snug and even rather than hard, and try again. Free, and it works often enough to be worth two minutes.

While the bonnet is off, look at the diaphragm — see the diaphragm page. If it needed replacing anyway, doing both at once saves you opening it twice.

Check the crack is really a crack. Dry the body off and run it again. Hairline splits in plastic are easy to imagine and easy to miss. Water will show you exactly where it is coming from within a few seconds.

Replacing the valve

Read this before you start, because there is a decision in the middle of it.

  1. Turn the water off at the tap or master valve, and open a station to drop the pressure in the line.
  2. Dig the valve out properly. You want 200mm of clear pipe on each side to work with. Doing this in a hole you can barely reach into is how the second mistake happens.
  3. Photograph the wiring before you disconnect it, and note which wire is the common.
  4. Note the direction of flow. There is an arrow moulded into the body. A valve fitted backwards will not seal, and it is a long way to come back for.
  5. Take the old valve out. If it is screwed to threaded fittings, unscrew it. If it is barbed into poly, cut the poly cleanly either side.
  6. Fit the new one the same way round, with thread tape on any threaded joint and hand-tight only. If the pipe now needs joining, use barbed fittings with clamps.
  7. Rejoin the two wires with gel-filled waterproof connectors.
  8. Turn the water back on slowly and check for leaks before you backfill. Then run the station.
  9. Put a valve box over it. This is the step people skip and it is the one that decides whether you are back here in five years.

Where to stop

Call somebody instead if any of these are true, and there is no shame in any of them:

  • You cannot find a way to turn the water off to that line. Cutting a live main-line is how a repair becomes a flooded yard.
  • The damage is on the main line rather than on a station — upstream of the valves, everything is under constant pressure rather than only when a station runs.
  • It is a manifold — three or four valves plumbed together on one assembly. Getting one out of the middle without disturbing the rest is genuinely fiddly.
  • The pipe is rigid PVC rather than black poly. Solvent-welded PVC needs the right primer, the right cement and cure time, and a joint that fails underground fails expensively.

Get a repairer onto it and tell them what you found. You have already done the diagnosis.

What it costs

A complete Hunter PGV 25mm solenoid valve is $32.50 to $34.89 — verified against Perth Irrigation's retail pricing, 5 August 2026. That is the whole valve: body, bonnet, diaphragm, solenoid.

Worth putting next to it: a replacement diaphragm on its own is around $50.60, also verified. If the body is going anyway, you are not losing anything by replacing the lot.

Fittings, clamps and thread tape: a few dollars, and the valve box on top of that. We have not verified box pricing.

If you pay somebody: unverified, and it depends heavily on how much digging is involved and whether it is a manifold. Ask whether the quote includes the valve, the box and the backfill, because those are the three things that get left out.

Common questions

Can a cracked reticulation valve body be repaired?

No. A split body or a stripped thread is replaced, not repaired. A complete replacement valve costs less than most single spare parts for it.

Why do reticulation valves crack?

Usually over-tightening — the fittings are plastic and seal on tape or an O-ring, not force. UV on a valve with no box, and ground movement pulling on the pipe, do the rest.

When should I not replace a retic valve myself?
